Repair or Replace? The Perth Owner Decision
When an air conditioner starts playing up in the middle of a Perth summer, the first question is almost always the same: do I fix this, or is it time for a new system? There is no single right answer, but there are a few honest rules of thumb that make the choice much clearer.
This guide walks through the main factors so you can decide with confidence, whether you run a single split system in Scarborough or a full ducted setup out in the foothills.
Start With the Age of the Unit
Age is the biggest single clue. Most split systems last around 10 to 15 years, and ducted systems are similar when they are looked after.
- Under 8 years: Almost always worth repairing. The unit is still within its useful life and parts are usually available.
- 8 to 12 years: The grey zone. Weigh the repair cost against efficiency and reliability (more on that below).
- Over 12 years: Lean towards replacement, especially if the fault is major or the system struggles in our summer heat.
Older units also tend to use older refrigerants that are being phased out, which can make a re-gas more expensive over time.
The 50 Percent Rule
A simple test used across the trade: if a single repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit, replacement usually makes more sense.
For example, a worn out compressor or a major control board on an ageing system can run into four figures. On a 13 year old unit, that money is often better put towards a new, efficient system rather than propping up old gear that may fail again next season.
If you are unsure what a repair should cost, our aircon repair page explains common faults and typical pricing, and a quick health check can confirm what is actually wrong before you spend anything.
Factor in Running Costs
A working old aircon is not the same as a good one. Air conditioner efficiency has improved a lot over the past decade. A tired non inverter unit can cost noticeably more to run than a modern inverter system doing the same job.
If your power bills have crept up every summer, replacing an old, inefficient unit can pay back part of the upfront cost through lower running costs. This matters most for systems that run long hours, like a ducted unit cooling the whole house through a Perth heatwave.
Repairs That Are Usually Worth It
Plenty of faults are cheap and sensible to fix on almost any unit:
- Blocked or dirty filters and coils, often solved with a proper split system service
- A faulty capacitor, sensor or thermostat
- A blocked drain causing water leaks
- Low refrigerant after a re-gas, provided there is no major leak
For ducted systems, issues with zoning, dampers or controllers can often be repaired far cheaper than a full replacement. Our ducted air conditioning service team can diagnose these without ripping anything out.
Signs It Is Time to Replace
Consider a new system when several of these stack up:
- The unit is more than 12 years old
- A major component has failed
- It no longer keeps up on the hottest days
- Running costs keep climbing
- It has needed repairs two or three summers in a row
If you do replace, sizing the new unit correctly is essential. An undersized system will struggle in our heat and an oversized one wastes money. Our aircon size calculator gives you a quick starting point, and the ducted air conditioning installation page covers full system upgrades.
Protect Whichever Way You Go
If you repair, regular servicing keeps the unit reliable and stops small faults becoming big ones. A maintenance plan spreads that care across the year so your system is ready before summer hits.
If you replace, the same applies from day one to protect your new investment and keep the warranty valid.
